When I consider the range of life’s possibilities, I feel blessed to be immersed in pan on a daily basis. Since my days as a youngster in New York City, pan has provided me endless opportunities for creativity. Teaching, performing, composing, arranging and recording – pan is my life, and I’m thankful every day.
Pan is the newest family of acoustic music instruments on planet earth invented and developed in the 1940s by West Indian youth on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. Pan is a bright light in our world – a new sound and energy and new medium to connect us and harmonize us.
I'd like to express my gratitude to the Trini pan pioneers. Ellie, Tony, Jules, Bertie et al. – you created this artform out of your imagination with the willpower to overcome the skepticism and harassment of a society that now acknowledges you as heroes and creators. I’m proud to play a part in the pan movement as it surges forward in the twenty-first century.
